Golden Oak Glow-Up Home Remodel
What do we do with all this golden oak? For these repeat clients, that was the big question when they approached the renovation of their home. This Lakeville, MN main floor and bathroom remodel was less about reinventing the space and more about helping it evolve alongside the way the homeowners live today. Like many homes built in the early 2000s, this one featured an abundance of golden oak and a layout that reflected how the family lived at the time. After 25 years, the homeowners’ daily routines, storage needs, entertaining style, and design taste looked very different.
Many people assume that updating a home means tearing everything out and starting fresh. This remodel proves otherwise. With a thoughtful plan, the spaces the homeowners use most feel fresh and modern while preserving many of the materials that have always made the home feel like their own.
Before: Good Bones, But No Longer Working
The home had great bones, with golden oak finishes everywhere from upstairs to down and a layout that fit how homes were designed at the time. Nothing was structurally wrong, but the rooms no longer worked the way the homeowners needed them to. Storage felt tight, and parts of the home felt closed off for everyday living and gathering.
After: A Home Reimagined Without Starting Over
Instead of removing the golden oak entirely, the design team found ways to work with it, blending the original materials with new finishes and a more current layout. Refinished red oak floors complement the home’s golden oak millwork, while updated finishes and materials introduce a more modern aesthetic. The balance between old and new gives the home a refreshed look without losing the warmth and character that always defined it.
The stunning transformation begins in the kitchen, the true heart of the home. The original two-tiered island is replaced with a single-level Cambria quartz-topped island that immediately cleans up the visual lines of the space. Recycled glass pendants hang above. It now serves as a gathering point for entertaining, baking, and setting up buffets when family and friends come together. A cast iron farmhouse sink anchors the island.
The design also focuses on the layout. The homeowners have specific storage needs, and the kitchen is designed so that everything has a place. Cabinets, drawers, and work zones are carefully planned to match how the homeowners cook and move through the space, making the kitchen far more enjoyable to use.
To support the busy household, the nearby laundry and mudroom are combined with improved storage solutions and a better system for managing the daily flow of coats, shoes, and laundry.
In the living room, the fireplace update shows how small changes can create a big visual impact. The original tile surround stays in place, while a new alder mantel gives the fireplace a fresh look. A Smoky gray finish on the built-ins flanking the fireplace update the overall look while keeping the storage in place. Nearby, the staircase balusters pick up the palette with a complementary charcoal finish, while the top and bottom rails retain the golden oak.
Upstairs, the main and primary bathrooms now feel clean, bright, and better laid out. In the primary bath, the corner jacuzzi gives way to a standalone tub, larger shower, and a single vanity that adds both counter space and storage, all framed by beautiful tilework. The main bathroom serving the other bedrooms features a shower/tub combination finished with vertically stacked artisan tile that brings light and height to the room.
A Home That Feels Fresh, Functional, and Familiar
In the end, this remodel demonstrates that refreshing a home doesn’t always require tearing it down to the studs. By blending existing materials with intentional design decisions, the homeowners now have spaces that feel current and suited to how they live today.
