Built more than a century ago in St. Paul’s Summit Hill neighborhood, this Queen Anne home reflected a time when cooking spaces were expected to work hard but stay largely out of sight. Despite a previous kitchen remodel, the layout remained unchanged, leaving the space out of step with the rest of the home. Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room transformed the layout, with original oak paneling carefully reused around the new opening to connect the spaces, preserving the character of the home. A hardworking pantry and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry bring new life to these everyday spaces, while a library ladder makes full use of the home’s tall ceilings and is a daily reminder that old houses still have a few surprises left to offer.
