THE GOAL

The goal for this remodel was to create a shared space with the new kitchen that allows for daily living and entertaining while at the same time, maintaining the charm of this old south Minneapolis home.

THE CHALLENGE

  • Generate privacy in the existing family room due to windows on both ends of the room
  • Gain more natural light by creating a more open floor plan given existing walls and sunken floor.
  • Match the character and styling of the home

SOLUTION

We removed the windows and patio door on one wall that were just showing the neighbors fence. These windows were reduced to two windows and placed up high on the wall to generate wall space. We raised the sunken family room floor to be flush with the kitchen. The center bearing wall was removed and this is how light was now able to race across the new kitchen and family room. A fireplace was added with cabinetry on both sides turning it into a great focal point when sitting in this room and also visiting with those in the newly opened up kitchen. Tie this in with newly finished wood floors, a great new kitchen, wonderful sight lines, one shared family space and you have just volunteered to have family gatherings for years to come.

This home was featured in the Spring 2013 Remodelers Showcase and won a ROMA 2013 award.
