Family Room & Screen Porch Addition
Vadnais Heights, Minnesota
2006 ROMA Award Winner
The Challenge: Design and build an addition despite
tight property set-backs; create views to the yard, yet
maintain privacy.
The Solution: Set at a 45° angle to the house, a warm,
comfortable family room and adjacent screen porch
expand entertaining and family gathering options.
A new gas, two-sided fireplace has a natural stone surround
with stone row lock on one side and brick row
lock on the other, and custom built wraparound mantle.
Soffits and cabinets are cherry, flooring is Australian
gum. High awning windows provide wall space for the
TV and privacy from the neighbors. Large windows give
a view to the backyard landscaping.
Family Room Portion of a Complete-Home Remodel
Mendota Heights, Minnesota
The Challenge: Update family room and open to living
room; achieve more natural light despite inability to
move windows due to siding restrictions at existing
window locations; incorporate woodwork generously.
The Solution: By opening the center bearing wall and
relocating mechanicals, more natural light enters both
family room and living room throughout the day.
Elegance is provided with a mix of woods – large profile
moldings, enameled woodwork, white oak flooring and
cherry cabinetry. The TV cabinet includes a motorized
lift and other electronics. The fireplace is enriched with
a granite surround and converted to gas.
Family Room Remodel in a Complete Home Renovation
Edina, Minnesota
The Challenge: Update the main socializing and entertaining area of a 1970s-era rambler for today’s living.
The Solution: Part of a complete home renovation, this room benefited from the overall redesign of the home’s traffic flow to create more open, light-filled spaces. We relocated the fireplace to create a focal point for an inviting conversation area, and added custom cabinetry – both around the new fireplace and along the length of the left wall just out of the photo. The McDonald Interior Design Studio created an elegant, harmonious feeling with furnishings and accessories throughout the home.
Family Great Room Remodel
Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota
The Challenge: Create a more open, easy-living great room from a cramped living room and kitchen in a 10-year-old townhome. Deal with uneven ceiling heights without changing the roof line.
The Solution: To open up the space and make it feel larger, we removed walls between the kitchen and living room, and also removed perimeter soffits. The old living room’s vaulted ceiling was redone to provide a consistent height of nine feet across the great room and kitchen. Rich oak flooring was installed throughout the great room, kitchen and into a four-season porch and all the wood trim was changed out for an upgraded feel and consistent look.
