Whether it’s baby boomers aging gracefully, the elderly, or someone living with a disability, the desire for people to adapt their home to their changing lifestyle is growing dramatically. We’ve found that practical, healthful design solutions can not only reduce hazards but also increase aesthetics when thoughtfully planned and crafted. Talk to us about how we can make it easier to live in your home – from a walk-in shower to an elevator, countertops at various heights, wider doorways and much more.
Elevator Installation
Prior Lake, Minnesota
The Challenge: Conveniently locate a three-story elevator shaft and elevator within an existing two-story walkout home, creating easy access to all floors for a wheelchair-bound couple, while seamlessly blending the elevator with existing finishes.
The Solution: We recognized the most workable stacked spaces for conversion to the elevator shaft were adjacent to the stairway: lower-level play room, main-floor mudroom, upstairs linen closet and attic. A new finished space was built into the attic to accommodate an elevator, new walkway and new linen closet, as well as a new skylight. When finished, the owners actually regained and enlarged lost closet space by reconfiguring the mudroom/laundry area and relocating the linen closet.
Bathroom Redesign
Eden Prairie, Minnesota
The Challenge: Make a bathroom and shower completely accessible for a child in a wheelchair.
The Solution: We enlarged the room by taking two feet from an adjoining bedroom and removing the existing tub/shower. A roomy new roll-in shower was created. Blocking was added in the walls to provide a strong foundation for grab bars. The new vanity is open and angled for wheelchair access. Lever-handled fixtures and door knobs are easier to grasp. And the doorway was widened for easy entrance. In addition, we built an entrance ramp in the garage, widened the home’s entrance door and installed wiring for a future elevator lift along the interior stairway.
